Opportunity cost of asymmetry

Doc Searls: “How many small service businesses can’t grow because people can’t (or don’t bother to) run servers in their homes? How many business-building activities are strangled before they are born by prohibitively narrow upstream bandwidths?”

As Doc describes, this issue is so significant because it is fundamental to how the communications companies have addressed the consumer market for internet access. The promise of the Web is falling short due to bandwidth constraints, from the perspective of both availability in many rural areas and in speed for uploads. It would in our collective interests economically to solve this problem.
