Fire and Motion with Google
Dare Obasanjo: “Google tends to create initiatives that are either much more expensive for their competitors than them to provide (e.g. giving users gigabytes of storage space for email but limiting sign ups on the service) or would be detrimental to their market share to compete with (e.g. allowing non-Google clients to access the Google Talk servers).”
I think space for e-mail was more about letting you keep all of your mail and search it. I know that I search old e-mail (in .pst files) all the time. While the large volume of mail storage does apply pressure to other companies, I’m not sure that was the original intent. However I agree with Dare on Google Talk. It is not a great piece of software by any stretch, however it gets the attention of all competitors. Google is practicing fire and motion- it will be interesting to see if the run out of bullets any time soon.
