Techmeme Tips on Twitter
Marshall Kirkpatrick’s “A Look Behind the Curtain at Techmeme” is an excellent review of some of the changes that Gabe Rivera has introduced at Techmeme since launching in 2005. Reading the article reminded me that I was first exposed to Techmeme by Robert Scoble when he was still working at Microsoft. I first thought of it as an uber-RSS application that would help to draw my attention to some of the more important things going on in my RSS feeds. These days, it is the “home page” for tech news on the web for me and many other users.
Buried in this piece is something that was announced weeks ago (but I missed it somehow)- a new feature that enables users to send Twitter tips to Techmeme for review by their new human editor, Megan McCarthy. This is an excellent idea that really drives home the benefits of social media. Many of the real “experts” in technology are people that are not necessarily prolific bloggers or affiliated with well known tech news outlets. This simple use of Twitter will drive a significant number of new and interesting sources to Techmeme, continuing to increase its quality and news relevance.
